YES - Go sledding!

Maybe you did not realize a great way to get in a workout is to play with your kids. Now playing in the snow is a great calorie burner.

Rochester, NY received at least 12 inches of snow yesterday which made a mess of the roads, but an absolutely awesome playground for kids and adults too.

This morning Kris and I took Mason and Anna to meet up with some friends to do some sledding at Webster Park.

You can burn a good number of calories in an hour of sledding, how many depends on how much you weigh. I weigh 122 Lbs so I burned 380 calories, while Kris weighing in at 175 Lbs, burned 546 calories. So a person weighing 150 Lbs. would have burned about 468 calories in 60 minutes of sledding. In addition to the calories burned while sledding your muscles will also get a workout as well.

Your legs (quadriceps, calves, hamstrings) are worked hiking back up the hill.
Your arms and shoulders (biceps, triceps and forearms) are used for holding onto the kids or the sled going down the hill, and carrying anyone or anything up the hill.
Your core muscles (lower back, abdominals) are used to stabilize you and your balance as well as control the direction you go on your sled.

Overall, I burned a few more calories today and I had a GREAT time sledding with my family!

Looks like more fun than I had on Friday! I spent 5 hours on Friday shoveling and helping neighbors get into their driveways! That was my exercise for the weekend. I was so sore Saturday and Sunday, I couldn’t even play wii!! Thank god they cancelled Pilates Saturday morning. :)

Kelly -

Glad to hear you got out in the snow. You would have burned about 430 calories per hour of shoveling (2150 for your 5 hours). I hope you drank plenty of water. Great work, way to be a good neighbor too. Your Wii will be waiting for you.

See you on Tuesday.
Tricia
