Are you ready for Winter Sports?

I am relatively new to downhill skiing, but I continue to learn and make progress one day and one season at a time.

Last season I tried using iMapMyRun to track my skiing while at Bristol Mountain – pretty neat to see, but not a real app for tracking my skiing.  I looked for more skiing apps for Bristol Mountain last year, not much to be found, keep hoping…

Mashable published an article:  Skiing and Snowboarding: 6 Apps For Conquering the Slopes

Here are six of our favorite mobile apps for keeping track of resort conditions, navigating the slopes, and capturing evidence to back up your bragging rights.

1. REALSKI Augmented Reality

2. Vail’s EpicMix App

3. iTrailMap 3D

4. Snow and Ski Report by REI

5. Elevation Pro

6. snowEdge

I am looking forward to checking out all of the above!  Thank you Mashable!

Vibram FiveFingers = almost barefoot

img_0420

When I wear them, people say… “WHAT ARE THOSE on your feet?” I often respond, “My UGLY bare-feet”

These shoes are my Vibram FiveFingers!

Vibram FiveFingers is different than any other footwear on the planet. Not only do they bring you closer to your environment, FiveFingers deliver a number of positive health benefits—by leveraging all of the body’s natural biomechanics, so you can move as nature intended.

6 Reasons to Wear Vibram FiveFingers:

1. Strengthens Muscles in the Feet and Lower Legs – wearing FiveFingers will stimulate and strengthen muscles in the feet and lower legs, improving general foot health and reducing the risk of injury.

2. Improves Range of Motion in Ankles, Feet and Toes – no longer ‘cast’ in a shoe, the foot and toes move more naturally.

3. Stimulates Neural Function Important to Balance and Agility – when wearing Vibram FiveFingers, thousands of neurological receptors in the feet send valuable information to the brain, improving balance and agility.

4. Improves Proprioception and Body Awareness – those same neurological receptors heighten body awareness, sending messages about body mechanics, form, and movement.

5. Eliminates Heel Lift to Align the Spine and Improve Posture – By lowering the heel, our bodyweight becomes evenly distributed across the footbed, promoting proper posture and spine alignment.

6. Allows the Foot and Body to Move Naturally, Which Just FEELS GOOD.

I am wearing the Sprint model, which costs about $80.

SPRINT IS BEST FOR: Climbing/Bouldering, Running, Fitness, After Sport, Water Sports, Yoga/Pilates & Travel.

So I decided to give all of these a try:  I wore these shoes running on the sandy beach at Durand Eastman Park & Beach and the paved trail as well. I wore these shoes running through the campgrounds while away with my family, I wore them at home running and walking on my treadmill. I wore them while I did yoga, pilates and calisthenics.  I wore these shoes playing on the playground with my kids, hiking and climbing up stairs, over rocks and through the water at Stony Brook State Park. I wore these shoes while jet-skiing and swimming at Conesus Lake.

Some of the things I love about my FiveFingers:

  • The feeling of security that the top strap provides.
  • Feeling the different textures as you walk/run over them – the stones and rocks in the creek, the sand on the beach, and the wood chips at the playground.
  • They dry quickly.
  • They are machine washable – no more stinky shoes!
  • I have small feet but even if I didn’t these shoes are  light weight and very compact – they will fit in any carry on bag.

2007 was a big year Apple’s iPhone was named TIME Magazine’s Invention Of the Year, and Vibram FiveFingers was named one of TIME Magazine’s Best Inventions of 2007. I can see why they are pretty cool!
